HIV/AIDS rate slowly climbs in Bali

Bali is expected to treat around 4,000 people with HIV and AIDS by the end of 2009, according to the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP).
As of May this year, there were 3,000 cases of HIV/AIDS on the tourist island.
50 million 'low-risk' Asian women at risk contracting HIV: UNAIDS

The United Nations Joint Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) says an estimated 50 million women in Asia are at risk of being infected by their partners or husbands, who may be carriers of the deadly disease. UNAIDS released the statement while disclosing its new findings on HIV/AIDS at the 9th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Tuesday.

It reports that men who solicit sex constitute the largest proportion of HIV-infected individuals, and it is likely most of them are either married or will get married in the near future. It estimates that over 90 percent of the 1.7 million women living with HIV in Asia were infected by their husbands or partners while in long-term relationships.

In 1990, women constituted 17 percent of all adult HIV infections in the region, but by 2008, the figure rose to 35 percent.
